For August 2018 or January 2019
The Whittle School and Studios is a new, ambitious project to modernise K-12 education and build the world's best physical and connected environment for human learning and development. The group will be constructing more than 20 PreK-12 schools in the world's most vibrant cities over the next 10 years designed by architect Renzo Piano and led by education entrepreneur Chris Whittle. The team is comprised of innovators in science, design, technology, and human learning applying their diverse talents to engineer education from the ground up. Their focus is on the science of learning, personalised curriculum, global experience, and holistic human development.
Why modernize education? Why build a global system of schools? Our planet and species face great environmental and political challenges that threaten our future. Our path to solving our biggest challenges will rest in human ingenuity, empathy, and collaboration that crosses borders, boundaries, disciplines, and worldviews. The Whittle School and Studios team believe deeply in the power of education as a transformative force– their school is dedicated to cultivating in its students the skills, creativity and character necessary to address the world’s existential challenges.
A Compelling Opportunity for Talent
Whittle School and Studios is now hiring a Division Head Lower School for its new school that will open in 2019 in Shenzhen, China.
Division Heads are key school leaders who will join in as partners and have the unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to modernize education and, beginning one campus at a time, create an unprecedented network of global schools. Division Heads must be experienced, smart, thoughtful, positive, engaging, and flexible leaders, with common sense, sound judgment, and sensibility, and comfortable leading, managing and growing their own division, the talents of those within it, and connecting productively to the Whittle network of schools.
They seek Division Heads that share the following fundamental core beliefs, including but not limited to:
• Student Centered Learning
Students learn and grow most fully when they are the centre of their learning.
• Mastery Based Learning and Assessment
Mastery comes from active engagement, collaborative experiences, and deep immersion.
• Faculty Growth and Development
Teachers are recognized as both experts and lifelong learners, with time to continually grow as lifelong learners.
They seek Division Heads with knowledge, experiences and a commitment to the following core Academic Principles:
• Learn by Doing: an interdisciplinary program rooted in experience, inquiry and problem-solving across disciplines;
• Choice and Voice: where optimal learning is personalized and targeted to where the learner is, how they learn and where their passions reside;
• Seeing the Whole Child: recognizing that people develop along multiple and
interconnected dimensions- emotional, intellectual, physical, ethical and social.
• Collaborating as a Team: recognizing that humans live and learn in thoughtful relationships with other people, and where our lives acquire meaning through friendship, empathy, kindness, and communication.
• Global Connections and Local Roots: where learning should have a positive
social impact fostering social awareness, responsible citizenship, cultural
inclusiveness, and active community engagement.
• Creating and Making: where students learn through innovation and making in an environment where it is safe to try and fail; and where faculty are encouraged and expected to advance innovative approaches to continuously improve professional practice to new levels of excellence.

This unique opportunity allows the initial Division Heads significant input into the definition and parameters of their own role in the continuing operation of the global school and campus organizations. A successful applicant will be comfortable with taking risks and using failure as moments of deeper learning, an innovator with an entrepreneurial spirit, and life-long learner with a passion for new ideas and opportunities. Although not required, experience in the start–up and scale-up of a new school, business or non-profit would be helpful.
